Materials Lists for our High School French classes

4 min read

Excited for French class to start in the fall? We are too! The items you need for High School French 1-4, or Middle School 1A or 1B, are all listed below.

Some of the links in these lists are Amazon affiliate links. As an Amazon affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases, at no additional cost to you. These items have been chosen for their educational value above all else! Where an item can be found at more than one retailer, I have linked both so you can shop for the best price & shipping preferences. Some of the items linked are just examples (and are labeled as such.)

All Classes

A headset is highly recommended for classtime, because it reduces the noise that the rest of the class hears from your background. It also helps us hear the individual student better, keeping everything running more smoothly. The one I've linked here is an example of the kind of thing you're looking for. Be sure to check for compatibility with the device your student will be learning (including how it connects!)

We do a lot of pen-to-paper work, because research tells us students learn better that way. You'll need to print a notes packet and a workbook packet, and keep them in a binder separated by dividers. You'll also need a good place to keep graded papers, whether in another section in the binder or elsewhere in your home. And finally, parents will need a place to keep assessments (quizzes and tests) until it is time to proctor them for their students. You can find these almost anywhere, but I've linked examples from Amazon.

If keeping graded papers in a separate location, a 1-inch binder is large enough.

If keeping graded papers in the binder, you might need a 2-inch binder.

Don't forget dividers! Personally I like the ones with pockets.

For these classes we also sometimes use color-coding in our notes. While highlighters or colored pencils can be useful, we find that colorful pens are the easiest to work with for our purposes. We like either one of these sets:

French 1A (Middle School)

Students will need this textbook, which can be found used on Abe books. Usually, it is less than $12. If you can't find it for that price, please reach out to me as there are students who can resell their copy from the previous year.

In addition, you'll pay a $10 materials fee so you'll have access to digital readers.

French 1B (Middle School)

Students will need this textbook, which can be found used on Abe books. Usually, it is less than $12. If you can't find it for that price, please reach out to me as there are students who can resell their copy from the previous year.

In addition, students will need a copy of this reader, C'est moi, la mouche! by Adriana Ramirez.

French 2

Students should keep their red, hard-back textbook from French 1. (Available here on Abebooks.)

Students who anticipate taking French 3 might also choose to buy the green BonVoyage level 2 book.

There is also a grammar workbook, which will be used a little each year in levels 2, 3, and 4. It is Complete French Grammar 5th Edition .

In addition, students will need a copy of a reader titled Isabelle capture un singe hurleur. I recommend looking for a copy priced under $12 with shipping if possible. Try Abebooks, Amazon, and TPRSbooks. You can also ask us about former students who may wish to resell their copies.

French 3

We will continue to use the green BonVoyage level 2 book. Usually, it is less than $12. If you can't find it for that price, please reach out to me as there are students who can resell their copy from the previous year.

They will also need Le Petit Nicolas, typically less than $12 with shipping on Abebooks. If searching for it elsewhere, be sure to use the ISBN 2070524272 to ensure you get the French language version and the page numbers will match the rest of the class.

There are also two grammar workbooks that we carry forward to French 4. They are Complete French Grammar 5th Edition and French 3 Years.

Students will also need a copy of a reader called Au Revoir l'Acadie. To purchase a physical copy, you can go to the publisher's website but shipping will cost you as much as the book. If you would like a digital copy, the cost is a little lower but you need specific instructions from the teacher to set it up with your class. It may also be possible to purchase this book used from a former French 3 student. Reach out to the instructor about this item.

French 4

For French 4, students should carry forward the grammar workbooks they bought for French 3: Complete French Grammar 5th Edition  and French 3 Years.

Additionally, they will need the Graded French Reader, Première Étape, Fifth Edition by Camille Bauer. This is available on Abebooks, usually for less than $18 with shipping. If you cannot find it for that price, please reach out to your teacher, as previous French 4 students may be able to resell.

In addition, you'll pay a $10 materials fee so you'll have access to digital readers.

So that's it! Let us know if you have any questions, and we look forward to seeing you in August!
